Irish Draught Information
Versatile Athletic Powerful
The Irish Draught horse breed originated from the small native Irish Hobby pony, which was then crossed with Anglo-Norman war horses brought to Ireland in the 12th century, creating a versatile farm horse capable of both pulling a cart and being ridden for hunting. Further infusions of Iberian horses from the Spanish Armada, Clydesdale, and Thoroughbred blood later contributed to the breed's current characteristics, making the Irish Draught a strong, athletic, and all-around working horse ideal for farm work, hunting, and riding in various disciplines.
The Irish Draught was officially recognized as a breed in Ireland in 1901. In 1900s, the Irish Government Ministry of Agriculture set up a registry for the breed, but unfortunately the studbook opened in 1917 was lost in a fire. During WWI, the breed’s popularity had skyrocketed as they made solid, easy-keeping cavalry horses that had a comfortable gait and they were used to help the war effort. The emergence of tractors and automobiles ultimately reversed the trend and numbers plummeted as the need for horses declined.

An animal of substance and quality, the Irish Draught horse is known for its good bone, short shin, good spring of rib, strong loins and hindquarters and an active powerful stride. Their excellent temperament make them an ideal choice for amateur riders. While their athleticism and willing nature make them suitable for most disciplines.
The Irish Draught is considered a warmblood breed and should not be confused with traditional Draft horses.

Our Community
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations classifies the Irish Draught (ID) horse as an endangered breed due to the declining population size. Falling purebred numbers, combined with a serious threat of genetic erosion, suggest that the ID population is in urgent need of conservation.
